Thanks for visiting my site. Just for clarification, these stories are written as I remember them, without any A.I. assistance. The information might not be 100% accurate, but it is as I remember it, and I ask your forgiveness if I unintentionally left out something I should have included, or for something that I didn’t remember quite right. There are no acknowledgments or references to other articles or works of research data for a simple reason, there are none. My writing techniques, or lack of them, have led to many critiques from family and friends. They don’t seem to comprehend why I elect to write every word, with one finger, being typed into my phone notes! Ha, imagine that! I tell them that I can’t think faster than one word at a time! Actually, they have been very supportive, as have so many of my long time friends from Arlington and beyond.
These little short stories are written to document tales I’ve told the grandkids about growing up in “the good ‘ole days”of the ‘50s and ‘60s, in Arlington, Texas. The stories would, however, apply to almost any small, dynamic town in America. Names and places would be different but the “gist” would be the same. The stories are clean, fun, and exude the feelings of friendship and appreciation.
It was a rapidly evolving world for us, with new horizons in technology, entertainment, transportation, music, social changes, fashion, education, occupational opportunities, and family lifestyles, all changing at once! It was a great time and place to grow up, with wonderful teachers, coaches and great friends, as well as a loving and supportive family and church. I was lucky to be a part of such an experience! My only hope is that you enjoy reading them as much as I did writing them!
Your friend,
Danny
With his family, Danny moved to Arlington, Texas in 1948. He felt like he was fortunate enough to be at the right place at the right time. Arlington was a dynamic college town, with amazing civic and educational leaders. The one and only high school was blessed with post-war, absolutely awesome, administrators, teachers, coaches, and families. What a place to be a part of and to cherish. Arlington also had exceptional civic leaders and churches. Everything considered, the kids had it ALL! Their time was unlike any before, and likely any since. In Danny’s opinion the stars lined up for him and so many of his lifelong friends.
The stories are all about important things such as that first bike ride, that first “special” smile, that first Cub Scout meeting, that first base hit, that first horse ride, that first call to the principal’s office, that first picnic date, that first job selling donuts, that first go-cart, that first 400 relay, that first country club dance, that first (and only) important tackle, that first car club project, that first crush, that first theme paper that exceeded a “C”, that first kiss; that first (and only) no-hitter; that first shrimp cocktail, that first touchdown, that first shop project, that first stick-shift driving lesson, that first car date, that first AHS pep rally, and that first realization that this was as good as it gets! The stories are clean, fun, and focus on feelings of gratitude and appreciation.
He’s not sure why, but one day in 2022, Danny thought that he should document what he could remember about growing up in Arlington after WWII. Danny thought maybe the grandkids would get a kick out of some of the stories. They actually did and they inspired the idea of a short story book. With the help of some family members and friends it came to fruition. His only wish is that you enjoy reading them as much as he did writing them!
Danny and his wife, and high school sweetheart, Becky now live in Santa Fe, New Mexico and still love listening to music of that era.
